Highway degradation and surface water pollution in an environmentally sensitive area of the Scottish Cairngorms Mountains famous for its whisky production have been tackled with an imaginative SuDS Solution from Hydro International which has averted potential road safety problems on the A95. Poor drainage, flooding and freezing weather had led to a landslip and extreme [...]
DEFRA served up an extra treat for us to digest over the Christmas holidays. The National Standards for SuDS were published for consultation on December 20. For the complete industry reaction, I suspect we’ll need to wait until the New Year is well underway. The National Standards are designed to provide a structure for the [...]
A precious part of London’s remaining medieval common land has been saved from the threat of pollution from nearby highways with a simple solution using Hydro’s Downstream Defender®. Mouchel Parkman, on behalf of the Highways Agency, contacted Hydro about the innovative hydrodynamic vortex separation device that saved Shortwood Pond, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, from serious pollution damage.
Construction of a new £30 million road to the north of Glasgow linking the town of Kirkintilloch to the motorway network has been constructed to high environmental standards. It required the installation of three Downstream Defender® Hydrodynamic Vortex Separators from Hydro International to remove silt and pollutants from surface water runoff near the town centre. [...]
A SUDS pond is a man-made pool that enables storage of stormwater in a natural environment with aquatic vegetation planted along its banks that encourages wildlife. Ponds provide stormwater attenuation and flood alleviation whilst providing a landscaped amenity in housing or commercial developments.
Infiltration basins are man-made depressions, engineered to hold back surface water and let it infiltrate into the soil, thus reducing the volume of run-off needing to be conveyed to end-of-pipe systems. Basins can be landscaped to create structures that appear natural and offer an amenity value for the local community.
Water quality control is an inherent part of surface water and stormwater management, and Downstream Defender® is ideal for preventing pollutants from reaching watercourses.
AN INNOVATIVE sustainable drainage solution using Hydro’s Downstream Defender® hydrodynamic vortex separator provided the ‘missing link’ in a scheme to minimise the environmental impact of an £8 million Scottish trunk road realignment.
The Hop Oast Park & Ride facility, designed in line with Horsham District Council’s policy of providing sustainable infrastructure and services, is used to reduce long stay parking in the town centre. Adding further to its green credentials, the council installed a porous pavement with a Hydro Stormwater Package System to ensure controlled, unpolluted surface water discharge to the local watercourse.
A major new sustainable road drainage scheme is providing stormwater control and reducing flooding risk following the £9.5 million improvement of the A340 Aldermaston Road in Basingstoke.
Part of a far-reaching transport and development action plan, the Fastlink bus link scheme along the Livingston / Edinburgh corridor required high performance storage and treatment of stormwater runoff in a constrained space. As West Lothian Council is committed to the principles of SUDS, the infrastructure construction incorporated a Stormcell® Storage system and Downstream Defender® hydrodynamic vortex stormwater treatment separators from Hydro International.
