Green roofs

Green roofs or “living roofs” are roofs of buildings that are partially or completely covered with carefully selected soils and self-sustaining and drought-resistant vegetation such as succulents and mosses, planted over an impermeable, waterproof membrane.

They may also include additional layers such as root barriers as well as drainage and irrigation systems. Green roofs serve several purposes for buildings, such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife, and helping to lower urban air temperatures and combat the heat island effect.
